Typical Service Life and Repair Expenses for Marine Structures

Many modern marine structures start to crumble within 20 – 40 years, especially in splash and tidal zones where wetting – drying cycles accelerate chloride penetration. Well-constructed seawalls and breakwaters often last 30 – 50 years before significant deterioration (e.g., cracking, spalling, or rebar corrosion) requires major intervention. But even these may require repairs much earlier due to cracking and reinforcement corrosion. Using advanced admixtures and / or supplementary cementitious materials like fly ash or slag can extend these lifetimes, at a cost.

Repair costs vary widely based on the extent of damage, location, accessibility, and repair method. Larger breakwater / seawall repairs can easily reach millions of dollars. Full replacements or extensive fixes (e.g., after storms) drive costs higher, with ongoing maintenance adding to the burden.

Why not use concrete that can last for centuries with minimal damage?
